Retro-reflectivity Tests

Retro-reflective sheeting for road signs is categorized by construction and performance specified by technical standards such as ASTM D4956 various types give differing levels of retroreflection, effective view angles, and lifespan. Sheeting has replaced button copy as the predominant type of Retro reflectometer used in roadway signs.
There are several grades of retroreflective sheeting which include the three major grades—
 Engineer grade
 Diamond grade and High intensity prismatic (HIP) grade sheeting

A Retro-Reflectometer is a device used to measure the coefficient of retro-reflected luminance (RL) of road markings. This value indicates how much light is reflected back to drivers at night, enhancing visibility and road safety. Evaluations in accordance with ASTM E1710, EN 1436, and IRC guidelines

Why Retro-Reflectivity Matters:

  • Improves nighttime driving safety
  • Ensures compliance with IRC and MoRTH standards
  • Supports regular maintenance and quality control
  • Enhances the longevity and performance of markings
